THE SUSCIPE Take, Lord, and received all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will, All I have and call my own. You have given all to me. To you, Lord, I return it. Everything is yours; do with it what you will. Give me only your love and your grace, that is enough for me. Saint Ignatius of Loyola, 1491-1556 Loyola Press + THANK YOU FOR THIS JOURNEY TOGETHER + It is sad to see this retreat come to an end. What a special time it has been   with Fr. Mark, St. Ignatius of Loyola and Jesus. Thank you, Holy Spirit, for being our guide in such a gentle way. How providential, Lord God, that we would end our retreat as our cities begin opening again after the coronavirus pandemic. Thank you, God for loving us. Lead us out shining your light more brightly than when we entered.

Day 27 | John 21.1-14

Chapter 21 The Appearance to the Seven Disciples.   1  After this, Jesus revealed himself again to his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. He revealed himself in this way.  2  Together were Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, Zebedee’s sons, and two others of his disciples.  3  Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We also will come with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.  4  When it was already dawn, Jesus was standing on the shore; but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.  5  Jesus said to them, “Children, have you caught anything to eat?” They answered him, “No.”  6  So he said to them, “Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.” So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in because of the number of fish.  7  So the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It...

Day 18 | Mark 4: 35-41

Mark 4:35-41   New American Bible (Revised Edition) (NABRE) The Calming of a Storm at Sea.   35  On that day, as evening drew on, he said to them, “Let us cross to the other side.”   36  Leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat just as he was. And other boats were with him.  37  A violent squall came up and waves were breaking over the boat, so that it was already filling up.  38  Jesus was in the stern, asleep on a cushion. They woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”  39  He woke up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Quiet! Be still!”  The wind ceased and there was great calm.  40  Then he asked them, “Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?”  41  They were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this whom even wind and sea obey?”

Day 17 | Mark 10:17-31

Mark 10:17-31   New American Bible (Revised Edition) (NABRE) The Rich Man.   17  As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”  18  Jesus answered him, “Why do you call me good?  No one is good but God alone.  19  You know the commandments: ‘You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your father and your mother.’”   20  He replied and said to him, “Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth.”  21  Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, “You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to [the] poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.”  22  At that statement his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions. 23  Jesus looked around and said to his d...

Day 16 | John 6:1-13

John 6:1-13   New American Bible (Revised Edition) (NABRE) Multiplication of the Loaves.   1  After this, Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee [of Tiberias].   2  A large crowd followed him, because they saw the signs he was performing on the sick.  3  Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples.  4  The Jewish feast of Passover was near.   5  When Jesus raised his eyes and saw that a large crowd was coming to him, he said to Philip,  “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?”  6  He said this to test him, because he himself knew what he was going to do.  7  Philip answered him, “Two hundred days’ wages  worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have a little [bit].”   8  One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him,  9  “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves  and two fish; but what good are thes...

Day 15 | Mark 7.31-37, John 2:1-12, Luke 19:1-10

Mark 7:31-37   New American Bible (Revised Edition) (NABRE) The Healing of a Deaf Man.   31  Again he left the district of Tyre and went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, into the district of the Decapolis.  32  And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him.  33  He took him off by himself away from the crowd. He put his finger into the man’s ears and, spitting, touched his tongue;  34  then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him, “ Ephphatha !” (that is, “Be opened!”)  35  And [immediately] the man’s ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly.  36  [ a ] He ordered them not to tell anyone. But the more he ordered them not to, the more they proclaimed it.  37  They were exceedingly astonished and they said, “He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and [the] mute speak.” ______________ Jo...

Day 14 | Discipleship: Matthew 5:13-16

What does it mean to be salt of the earth and light of the world? 13  “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.  14  You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.  15  Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house.  16  Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.

Day 13 | The Call of Peter: Luke 5.1-11

Luke 5   New American Bible (Revised Edition) (NABRE) Chapter 5 The Call of Simon the Fisherman. [ a ]   1  While the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listening to the word of God, he was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret.  2  He saw two boats there alongside the lake; the fishermen had disembarked and were washing their nets.  3  Getting into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, he asked him to put out a short distance from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat.  4  After he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.”  5  Simon said in reply, “Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets.”  6  When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing.  7  They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come to help the...

Luke 4   New American Bible (Revised Edition) (NABRE) Chapter 4 The Temptation of Jesus. [ a ]   1  Filled with the holy Spirit, [ b ]  Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert  2  for forty days, [ c ]  to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over he was hungry.   3  The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”  4  Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone.’”   5  Then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant.  6  The devil said to him, “I shall give to you all this power and their glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I may give it to whomever I wish.   7  All this will be yours, if you worship me.”  8  Jesus said to him in reply, “It is written: ‘You shall worship the Lord, your God,  ...
