Day 6 | Psalm 103

103 Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
    bless his holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits,
who forgives all your iniquity,
    who heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
who satisfies you with good
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.
The Lord works righteousness
and justice for all who are oppressed.
He made known his ways to Moses,
his acts to the people of Israel.
The Lord is merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
He will not always chide,
nor will he keep his anger forever.
10 He does not deal with us according to our sins,
nor repay us according to our iniquities.
11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
    so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
12 as far as the east is from the west,
so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
13 As a father shows compassion to his children,
so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.

Was struck by the way Fr. Mark explained the purposes for acknowledging sin on Day 4:

To know truly who we are
So we can take our sinful selves to God
So he can forgive us
and we can experience the great mercy of God.

At first when I wrote the second line in my journal I wrote it as, "So we can take our sins to God," but as I listened again I felt God nudge me to hear that he said, "So we can take our sinful selves to God." Hmmm. Both more threatening and redeeming to take my sinful self rather than just my sins to God.

Yes...the joy of finally accepting forgiveness. Accepting COMPLETES the transaction. There is God. Hovering over me. Seeing how miserable I am. Waiting for me to come to terms with my fallen nature. Waiting for me to weepingly accept that I am human. Waiting for me to stop punishing myself (albeit unconsciously) and throw myself on his merciful love. This is HEALING! This is the basis of Health!

But, I am beginning to notice that my sins are like giant boulders. I would be squashed if I saw /experienced them all at once. So —just as the stones come up out of the ground every winter — I keep on SEEING these HUGE SINS APPEAR. It is still a shock to me. Not so much the sin as my total blindness to it.

God’s MERCY!!! God’s mercy that we live in Time....and are given time to process. God’s incomprehensible Grace that God LONGS to have us see, ask and receive forgiveness.

Day 14 | Discipleship: Matthew 5:13-16

What does it mean to be salt of the earth and light of the world? 13  “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.  14  You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.  15  Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house.  16  Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.
